What it is:

Virtual Linux Station (VLS) is a sophisticated tool for remote desktop sharing that allows you to use, as if it were on your desktop, a complete and powerful Linux station. VLS is system independant, i.e. it is usable by all commonly available operating system, such as Ms Windows, Macos, Linux, etc. All you need is to download a small client application for your operating system (see below).

What you can do:

This tool allows you to easily use many tools and applications, such as Openoffice ( group of applications for office automation, a free alternative to Microsoft Office), Gimp (professional image manipulation program, a free alternative for Photoshop), and many other applications already configured and ready to use. You will also find bioinformatics tools such as Phred, Phrap and Consed, (graphical applications for assembling and viewing genetic sequeces).

Why you should use it:

Because VLS offers you a ready to start hi performace Linux machine, with applications already configured, some of these available only on Unix/Linux environment. Good point is also that performance of applications are independant on wich computer you use locally, because all application are not running on your local machine. This allow you to use efficently applications that you cannot use locally on your machine.

How to use it:

To use the vls system with the best performace, select one of this link, according to your local platform:
  • If you locally use a Mac (OS X or OS 9) follow this link
  • If you locally use a PC with Windows (NT, 95, 98, 2000, ME, or XP) follow this link
  • If you use Linux or Unix on your computer follow this link

If you are a Ceinge user, you can also access the vls without any program, selecting one of this link:

Once the applet is loaded do not insert any password, just press enter; then, you will be asked for the username and password. This isn't the best way to use vls, because this service is very limited; it is strongly recommended to install the vnc client as described in the links above.

Suggestions & others:

If you wish send comments, suggestion or if you know (or need) tools and application not already installed, send a mail to the vls support.
