ENSEMBL is a joint project between EMBL - EBI and the Sanger Institute to develop a software system which produces and maintains automatic annotation on selected eukaryotic genomes. The Ensembl project aims to provide: accurate, automatic analysis of genome data analysis and annotation maintained on the current data aresentation of the analysis to all via the Web distribution of the analysis to other bioinformatics laboratories Ensembl will concentrate on vertebrate genomes, but other groups have adapted the system for use with plant and fungal genomes. Currently, the following genomes are available (some in a pre- state): Homo sapiens, Pan troglodytes, Macaca mulatta, Mus musculus, Rattus norvegicus, Canis familiaris, Bos taurus, Loxodonta africana, Echinops telfairi, Dasypus novemcinctus, Monodelphis domestica, Gallus gallus, Xenopus tropicalis, Danio rerio, Takifugu rubripes, Tetraodon nigroviridis, Ciona intestinalis, Ciona savignyi.
