ENSEMBL is a system created by EMBL/EBI and Sanger Institute for the automatic annotation of eucariotic genomes. It provides a powerful web interface for searching and browsing the information stored into databases. The current version of ENSEMBL collects data from 35 different eucariotic genomes, including 30 chordates and 21 mammals; notwithstanding both the number of organisms and the quality of annotations are continuously growing.
The CEINGE Bioinformatics group has always ensured a local installation of ENSEMBL, considered as a useful resource for the research community. Considering the complexity of the system and the frequency of updates, we developed a procedure for the automatic update of the local installation of ENSEMBL. It consists of a series of programs which on a daily basis check the current version of ENSEMBL and, if needed, perform the update by downloading new data sets, by creating data banks and by switching to the updated version of ENSEMBL.
The current ENSEMBL version is 45, of june 2007.
ENSEMBL è un sistema realizzato da EMBL/EBI e Sanger Institute per l’annotazione automatica di genomi di organismi eucarioti. Esso fornisce una potente interfaccia per la ricerca di informazioni e per la ‘navigazione’ dei dati. Al momento ENSEMBL presenta dati per 35 diversi genomi eucarioti, di cui 30 sono cordati e, tra questi, 21 sono mammiferi; cionondimeno il numero di organismi, così come la qualità delle annotazioni, sono costantemente in crescita.
Sin dalle sue prime attività, il gruppo di bioinformatica del CEINGE ha garantito una installazione locale di ENSEMBL, considerandolo una valida risorsa per la comunita’ scientifica. Data la complessita’ del sistema e la frequenza con cui esso viene aggiornato, e’ stata appositamente sviluppata una procedura per l’aggiornamento completamente automatico dell’installazione locale di ENSEMBL. Essa consiste in una serie di programmi che quotidianamente controllano la versione corrente di ENSEMBL ed, eventualmente, eseguono l’aggiornamento attraverso il download dei nuovi dati, la creazione delle banche dati e il passaggio alla nuova versione.
