The email service is based on sendmail and is fully integrated with other services (clamav antivirus, spamassassin antispam, online dynamic blacklists) to offer controlled delivery, junking the unwanted emails. An archiving service is provided for old email, which moves emails older then 1 month in mailboxes, located in the user space, one for each year.

[edit] Mail client configuration

In this section, you will be able to configure the most common e-mail client. There are listed, three various sections, one dedicated to the configuration of the client Apple Macintosh, one for PC windows, and one for PC linux.

All the clients listed can be configured with protocol like POP and IMAP, moreover they can be configured with Transport Layer Security (TLS) or Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption protocols in order to securely transmit your password and all communication between your email client and our incoming servers.

GENERAL CONFIGURATION

incoming mail server mailcheck.ceinge.unina.it
outgoing mail server mailsend.ceinge.unina.it

The maximum size allowed for attachment files is 20MB

CONFIGURATION RULES

In general, is a good practice to use protected protocols (TLS/SSL) for incoming and outgoing mail servers. For the outgoing mail server the encrypted protocol based on username authentication is not required for computers directly connected to the ceinge network; in case of clients sending emails from external network (ie your computer at home, connected by an ADSL provider) you must use a configuration based on authentication and TLS/SSL protocols.

[edit] Webmail

The webmail service allows the users to read and send emails wherever they are, by using a normal internet browser. It works as a regular email client software (outlook, eudora, thunderbird) but doesn't require any previous configuration; the ceinge username and password are needed to access and use the service.

The access to the user mailbox is based on the IMAP protocol and allows the users to manage multiple mailboxes and not just the inbox container (ie: Spam mailbox, sentmail mailboxes, yearly archived mailboxes).

[edit] Mail Services

  • Mailscanner
  • Antivirus

Each email passing through the ceinge mailserver is scanned by the clamav antivirus in order to block infected messages and attachments. The virus search is based on a lookup of a database, continuously updated to detect the newest viruses. In case of detection of a virus the sender of the email is notified with a warning message.

  • Antispam

The antispam software acts on all the incoming emails, applying a number of rules to determine whether an email is spam or not. According to these rules, the email is assigned a certain score, depending on the test, and several headers are added to the mail. The total score resulting from all tests is used to deliver the spam emails in the "Spam" mailbox or in the normal "Inbox", comparing this spam score with a predefined threshold. The threshold is chosen not too low to avoid false detection of good emails but still performing appropriate recognition rates of the spam.

In the above example, a mail header is showen and a number of information are added by the antispam, where a fixed threshold of 6 is exceeded by a 32.143 score; as result, the email is tagged with an "X-Spam-Status" field to "yes".
